The Original Boomer was camped just outside the Gateway when he heard footsteps circling the fire.
Slow ones.
Crunch.
Pause.
Crunch.
He looked up.
Nothing there.
“Righto,” he muttered, and went back to making coffee.
The footsteps started again.
Crunch.
Pause.
Crunch.
This time they stopped directly behind him.
Boomer didn’t turn around.
Instead, he calmly poured a second mug and placed it on the log beside him.
“Milk’s all I’ve got.”
For nearly a minute, the bush went completely silent.
Then something unseen picked up the mug.
Boomer finally turned.
The log was empty.
So was the mug.
Only one thing had changed.
Three long claw marks now ran through the dirt beside the fire, pointing toward the trees.
Boomer stared at them, took another sip of coffee and nodded.
“Could’ve said thanks.”
By sunrise, the claw marks were gone.
The second mug never turned up.
Boomer still packs two.
